The College of Home Science, Udaipur was established in the year 1966 as a part of Rajasthan College of Agriculture with graduation degree (B.Sc. Home Science). It became an independent college in 1970. The Home Science institution can undoubtedly claim its pioneering status within the state wherein many new government and private Home Science institutes have grown and blossomed under its leadership. In 1977, the college was shifted to its present building spread over an area of 12,385 sq. m. with separate administrative and library block of 2790 sq. m.

Since its inception the college has made rapid growth in terms of teaching, research and extension. Home Science is an applied, and professional discipline that prepares an individual to obtain recent scientific information in the urban as well as rural context. The need of Home Science education in the Agricultural universities emerged with an increased awareness of the role of rural women in contributing to family economy and raising their standard of living. But today with the technological advancements and women seeking to come in the work force in large numbers, it is imperative that their drudgery and burden both in the rural and urban perspective be reduced and family life geared with adopting more scientific know how. Thus the status of home science has widened, and the demand for this education is on the rise and the job potentials are also immense. Its scope is not confined to strengthening home and family life only but it is an education having major role for community welfare and empowerment of women. It has ample scope for practical family applications and professional possibilities. This has necessitated the institution to keep in conformity with the changing times and shift the objectives to broader perspective than those conceived earlier. It provides broad based culturally relevant knowledge in Human Development and Family studies, Foods and Nutrition, Family Resource Management, Home Science Extension and Communication Management and Textiles and Apparel Designing.

The college offers 4 years’ B.Sc. degree programme with 2 years of general orientation to home science discipline and later 2 years are devoted to intensive experiential learning in one of the five packages offered by each department. In the B.Sc. degree programme students are also placed for in-plant training for one semester in various reputed organizations. All the departments of the college have M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes. The departments possess well equipped laboratories having sophisticated equipment. Computer and internet facilities are available to all UG and PG students. The library offers LAN facility along with SOUL software and is fully digitized, having over 19000 books, facility of 63 national and international journals and a Book Bank. An All India Co-ordinate Research Project on Home Science is operational in the college since 1980. A Middle Level Training Centre is also being run by the college since 1982 which is the only one in the state.
